Things to Keep in Mind if You’re Considering a Keratin Treatment

If you’ve read our previous blog post, you know that a Keratin treatment is a great way to get straight, relaxed hair in just one hair appointment. However, not all Keratin treatments are created equal, nor do they create the same results for every hair type or texture. In order to help you decide whether a Keratin treatment is right for you, here are three things to keep in mind before you commit.

There is no such thing as an “organic” Keratin treatment

We’re going to be blunt: There is no such thing as a “natural” or “organic” hair-straightening process. In order to truly tame your frizz, your hair will need to be soaked in chemicals that are powerful enough to semi-permanently alter its texture. However, don’t let this deter you from opting for the process—just be aware that it’s not something you can repeat every month. Most hair stylists recommend getting keratin treatments three times per year, and even less for those with extra-sensitive hair.

Know that you can’t touch your hair for 3 days after treatment

Touching your hair—or clipping it, putting it in a ponytail, or washing it—after a traditional keratin treatment can risk “denting” it and ruining its straight appearance. Therefore, be aware that you’ll have to leave your hair alone for a few days after the treatment. This is not the hairstyle to attempt right before a big event like, say, a wedding.

Your hair color could be slightly altered

If your hair is colored, it’s possible that the Keratin treatment will lighten or fade it somewhat. This is mainly due to the clarifying shampoo applied prior to the Keratin process, which is used to remove residue from hair, but may also remove some color. Hair glosses, toners, or any demi- or semi-permanent colors are especially susceptible to this effect.

Understand that Results May Vary

In theory, a keratin treatment should semi-permanently straighten even the tightest curls. Occasionally, however, clients will receive slight, gentle waves, which still need to be flat-ironed. It all depends on how strong the treatment is, how it was applied, what the temperature of the flat-iron was, and how porous and textured your hair is. This doesn’t mean perfectly straight hair is impossible, however–it just might take us a few tries to get it just right.
