A Quick Guide to Hair Extensions, from Our Cary Hair Stylist

The red carpet has a secret: Hair extensions. How else do you think celebrities go from a chic bob to mermaid-esque waves overnight? Chrissy Teigen, Kim Kardashian, and Britney Spears are just a few celebrities who worn extensions to add length and fullness, for better or worse. Before you decide to take the plunge, here are some things to consider from our Cary hair stylist.

Consider your Lifestyle

Before stepping into our Cary hair salon to get extensions, have some idea of the kind of extensions you want, and whether or not it will accommodate your lifestyle.

  • Clip-in hair extensions are popular with beginners, since they are removable and allow you to “try on” the extensions without making a commitment.
  • The second option is tape hair extensions. These are held in place with strong bi-adhesive tape that is almost undetectable. These last for eight weeks. However, they are not a good option if you are very active—if you do a lot of hot yoga, for instance.
  • The third choice is keratin hair extensions. These are attached with a high-tech sound activation process that binds them semi-permanently to the hair. They last for three months or more. These are generally the highest-quality and most realistic hair extensions; however, they are not a good idea for someone on a budget. Keratin extensions are also not a good choice for someone who is just considering the hairstyle, or who likes to change their hair color often. Once these extensions are in, they’re in!

Choose Quality, in Every Sense of the Word

If you want the fact that you’re wearing extensions to be a secret known only to you and your hair stylist, you will have to splurge on two types of quality: a quality product, and quality workmanship. While synthetic hair extensions are the most affordable option, they tangle easily and tend to look shiny and unnatural. You’ll want to stick with “non-virgin” hair—not the hair of someone who’s had some fun in the bedroom, but hair that’s never been dyed or treated before.

You should also expect to spend some money on a reputable, quality hair salon with good reviews and referrals. A professional hair stylist will be able to match the extensions to the exact shade of your hair, so that they blend right in. They will also be able to work in the extensions in a way that is completely natural and undetectable. Extensions should never fall out, and they shouldn’t cause pain either. A skilled hair stylist will be able to make sure that all of this is taken care of. Remember, you get what you pay for!
